Black Game Pros gathered for Black History Month to offer their advice for the next generation of Black video game professionals.

At Ubisoft, we’re continuing to reflect on how we can contribute to making the video game industry a more inclusive space, particularly for the Black community. For the sixth edition of our Black Game Pros event, we wanted to celebrate Black History Month with Black Game Pros of diverse career backgrounds from across North America. At this global digital event , panelists shared their experiences succeeding in different areas of the industry with the goal of inspiring future developers and artists.

Ubisoft Toronto Black Game Pros: “Why I Make Games”

From Job Applications to Building Community

Topics during this Black Game Pros Mixer included tips for those trying to make initial connects in the industry, ways to find community, and how to make sure you’re presenting the best of your work experience throughout the application process.

The event kicked off with a keynote presentation from Ryerson University video game professor Dr. Kris Alexander on teaching kids through video games. In his talk, Alexander explores video games from three different perspectives: as a player, as a parent, and as a professional.

Hosted and moderated by Ubisoft Toronto development tester Kurston Timothy, the panels tackled how to succeed throughout the job application process and how we continue to build the Black community in the games industry.

Guest panelists included:

Richard Arroyo – Art Animation Director, Ubisoft Montreal
Riana Manuel – Senior Manager Brand Marketing, G4TV
• Venessa Nyarko – Production Manager, Ubisoft Toronto
Zavian Porter – Team Lead Level Designer, Ubisoft Toronto
• Kareem Shuman – Technical Dialog Designer, Bungie
• Shedona Nash – Motion Graphic Designer

Thank you to everyone who joined us live on February 25th.
